EPD is short for Environmental Product Declaration. The three letters stand for the English term Environmental Product Declaration. An EPD describes building materials, building products or building components with regard to their environmental impact based on life cycle assessments as well as their functional and technical properties. This quantitative, objective and verified information relates to the entire life cycle of the construction product. Therefore, EPDs form an important basis for the sustainability assessment of buildings.
The EPD is the environmental label that is suitable for all construction-related products and services. Building materials, building products and building components are not per se environmentally friendly or environmentally harmful, because they are not end products but intermediate products. Their influence on the environment depends on many factors, because the environmental impact of individual building products is only decided when they interact with the building.
